Los Van Van ar one of the good important and influential bands in the history of twentieth 100 Cuban pop music. Though the 1990s were pervaded by groups that assorted folkloric and traditional euphony with the musical trends of the day, and the rootage of the twenty-first century sawing auto that process go stage farther, in the sixties and '70s that Latino nuclear fusion reaction sensitiveness was scarce at jacques Charles Herbert Best. There were primarily 2 Cuban groups experimenting with admixture jut, funk, rock, and psyche with their native traditions. One of those two was Irakere, and the other, far more persistent band was Los Van Van.

Following the revolution, Cuban juvenility were profiled for talents and predispositions. Children showing potentiality in athletics were aerodynamic into sports. Academics, ocular humanities, and music followed suit. The young musicians wHO formed Los Van Van had enjoyed indoor garden educations from their earliest days, and were experts in theory and public presentation by their former twenties. The band's key players -- Juan Formell (bandleader, bass player, and ballad maker), César "Pupy" Pedroso (piano, songster), and José Luis "Changuito" Quintana (drumset/timbales) were fascinated with the soul, go-go, and disco euphony that dominated U.S. radio waves. They named their dance circle Los Van Van after the go-go craze, meaning literally "they go-go!"

The style that the band pioneered took its make from the cross of son and go-go music that the stripe had created. The style "songo" can buoy now be base end-to-end the Latin jazz, protrude, and fusion human race. Los Van Van's debut magnetic disc bore the name, curing its position in musical history constantly. Shortly after the band's formation, they became the island's front-runner dance band, a deed of conveyance they held for age.

With the support of the Cuban government, Los Van Van toured and recorded and toured inexhaustibly throughout the '80s and '90s. They became the best-known Cuban grouping in the human beings, maintaining a loyal fan base end-to-end Europe. Though there was some U.S. interest in the band and their innovations, the politics of the years weasel-worded their ability to come apart into the U.S. grocery. While Irakere defected to States, Los Van Van ne'er left Cuba. U.S. interest grew passim the '90s, peaking with Los Van Van's Grammy Award in 1999 for their 15th original album, Llegó Van Van.

Many creation members have gone on to suit successful bandleaders in their have right. César "Pupy" Pedroso formed his possess group, Los Que Son, Son, at the turn of the 100. Lúis "Changuito" Quintana left hand the band in 1993 to pursue a Latin idle words career. Many lesser-known members went on to become some of the most influential players in the timba revolution that came in the other '90s.

'Dark Knight' Reigns Over Box Office For Second Week

The Box-Office Top Five

#1 "The Dark Knight" ($75.6 one thousand thousand)

#2 "Step Brothers" ($30 million)

#3 "Mamma Mia!" ($17.9 million)

#4 "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" ($10.2 million)

#5 "Journey to the Center of the Earth" ($9.4 million)

In the opening scene of "The Dark Knight," the Joker robs millions from Gotham National Bank, setting off a chain reaction that spirals the city into a cycle of despair and chaos. Maybe, instead, he should have just waited for his residuals?

For the second hebdomad in a row, Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" kicked and smashed its way to a elephantine win at the domestic box power, earning $75.6 million over the weekend for a 10-day total of $314.2 million.

To put those numbers into perspective, after simply 10 days "The Dark Knight" is already the second-highest-grossing photographic film of 2008, just behind the three-month haul of "Iron Man." But forget Tony Stark, the Scarecrow, the Penguin and even the Riddler Batman's greatest opposition at this point isn't another superhero or some crazy scoundrel, but history. Let us count the records: With $75.6 million, "The Dark Knight" scored the highest second-weekend total of all time (Pow!); the highest 10-day total always, besting "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" by more than $50 million (Smash!), and the record for fastest cinema to stumble $300 million (Crunch!). It's also already among the top 25 highest-grossing films of all time; and it's the one recent movie with a decent shot at potentially thrashing "Star Wars" by landing in the neighborhood of half a billion dollars in the U.S. solitary. And, again, it's been out for 10 days. (Wow!)

Send up a signal, Commissioner Gordon it's time to start mentation about "Batman 3."

("Dark Knight" scribe David Goyer says he's got an melodic theme for "Batman 3." Help us figure out what it is on the Movies Blog.)

Like last weekend's box business office, there was Batman and then thither was everybody else. But other films did handle to do some business, most notably Will Ferrell's "Step Brothers," which scored $30 gazillion to come in endorsement place. The comedy about a couple of middle age men stuck in arrested development was the fourth-highest opening of Ferrell's career.

In third post, the dulcet tones of Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan (OK, not Pierce Brosnan) helped their ABBA-palooza "Mamma Mia!" to fall only 35 percent, pickings in some other $17.9 million. With an boilersuit total of $62.7 million, the musical is a sure bet to crack $100 million domestic.

The same cannot be aforesaid of "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," which tanked at the box office after the franchise's protracted hiatus away from the limelight, earning a dismal $10.2 meg to derive in fourth place. Called for commentary, a representative from the film aforesaid that all their usual supporters were abducted by aliens. Go figure.

Rounding out the top five, "Journey to the Center of the Earth" earned $9.4 million, bringing its three-week tot up to a very respectable $60 million.

Upcoming Releases

Can Batman win three fights in a row? We'll say this: It'll be close, as "Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" opens in 3,600 theaters. Also opening in all-encompassing release is "Swing Vote," a Capra-esque comedy star Kevin Costner as a man wHO gets to decide the presidential election.

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight," "Step Brothers" and "Mamma Mia!"

Liza Minnelli - Minnelli In Uk Visa Fiasco

Veteran singer/actress LIZA MINNELLI was almost forced to scrap a series of concerts in the U.K. after immigration officials refused her entry into the country.

The 62-year-old was stopped shortly after arriving at London's Heathrow airport on Saturday (24May08) night and questioned over her work visa.

A spokesman for Minnelli says, "Liza's team had applied for the correct permit, but it seems that they underestimated just how much time it would take to process."

Minnelli's first show at London's Coliseum on Sunday (25May08) night went ahead as planned. The star's U.K. tour concludes in Glasgow, Scotland on 6 June (08).

Iron Man - movie review

The summer movie season arrives with a clang as Iron Man, a second-tier superhero
from the mighty Marvel Comics universe, receives a first-rate film adaptation courtesy
of director Jon Favreau (Elf, Zathura) and his perfectly-cast leading man, Robert
Downey Jr.

A standard origin story, Iron Man stays faithful to its comic-book roots while making
necessary upgrades that enhance the characters rich history. Favreau and his screenwriters
follow shortcuts instituted by the superior Batman Begins and the inferior Spider-Man.
The first half establishes our hero outside of his costume. The second half ramps
up the action as it confronts a central villain and lays groundwork for potential
sequels.

Iron Man's true identity is Tony Stark (Downey), the genius son of a renowned weapons
manufacturer whose family business, Stark Industries, provides cutting-edge technologies
for our military's defense systems. In the comics, Stark was wounded while attending an
armed-forces demonstration in Vietnam. Favreau comments on our current political
landscape by shifting his action to Afghanistan, but he keeps the outcome the same.
When Stark's convoy is attacked, he catches a near-fatal chunk of shrapnel with hi
s chest. While detained by terrorists, the inventor builds an armor-plated suit that
simultaneously keeps the metal away from his heart as it assists in his escape.

Casting makes or breaks a superhero movie -- Christopher Reeve embodied Superman's
hopeful ideals, but Ben Affleck made for a dull Daredevil. Iron Man gets off on the
right foot because Downey is Stark. The actor comes equipped with a billionaire's
unchecked self-confidence. And while Downey hedges when conveying the role's heroics,
that uncertainty actually reflects Stark's own hesitancy embracing his newfound calling.

Only true sadists hope for an actual performance in a superhero movie, and we celebrate
whenever we're rewarded with a Downey, Hugh Jackman, or Christian Bale. Summer crowds
crave spectacle, and Iron Man packs enough to satisfy. The highlight is Stark's sleek
suit, a streamlined piece of geek pop art. Imagine the offspring of a Terminator-Transformer
love affair and you're on the right track.

Oscar winners and nominees supplement the special effects. Chrome-domed Jeff Bridges
is Obadiah Stane, Stark's business partner who maintains the company's focus on advancing
weapon technologies. His resemblance to Dick Cheney, both in look and action, can'
t be coincidental.

Stark's pal Jim Rhodes (Terrence Howard), a pilot in the United States Air Force,
reaps the benefits of Stark's destructive inventions. Iron Man fans know this character
one day dons his own suit of armor as War Machine, and Howard tosses off a clever
line that hints at his role in future installments.

Finally, uber-secretary Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) keeps Stark's extracurricular
affairs in order. Paltrow brings the right mix of bravery and vulnerability, though
the film's repeated attempts at forging a love connection with Downey fizzle.

Favreau's Iron Man doesn't redefine the genre the way Christopher Nolan's Batman did
, but it's a solid, well-crafted launch for what should be a lucrative franchise.

OK, we got it. You're Iron Man.
